1. Experimental Conditions 1.1 Cell Assembly Figure S1: Experimental setup. 5 cm2 cell hardware was procured from Fuel Cell Technologies (product code 5SCH). Graphite blocks had serpentine flow fields to deliver the electrolyte to the electrodes and copper plates on the back of the graphite blocks were used as current collectors. Cells were constructed using Nafion 117 membranes that had been hydrated in water for at least 24 h. Both electrodes were 2.5 GFD felts from Sigracell. Electrodes were plasma cleaned on both sides for 5 min to increase the hydrophilicity of the surface and improve wetting of the electrode. Electrodes and exchange membranes were gasketed in Teflon sheets and bolts were tightened to a pressure of 80 in-lbs. In selected experiments a Pt pseudo reference electrode (RE) was used to determine the amount of polarization occurring in the cell. The RE was placed on the ion exchange membrane on the side of the PE and offset so that it was only in contact with the membrane and the Teflon gasket. Electrolyte was pumped with Cole-Parmer Masterflex L/S peristaltic pumps, using PFA tubing. 17PDF Image | Chlorine Gas Generation in Mixed-Acid Vanadium Redox
