The lowest observed Faradaic efficiency of our graphite-rod reactor is only 15%, so we need to release at most (1430 Coulombs/0.15 = ) 9500 Coulombs in the water. Recalling that the system has an average current of 6.5 Amps, in order to release 9,500 Coulombs, the system has to run for 1465 seconds, i.e., 24.5 minutes. We use 30 minutes as it is easier to remember, and ~20% margin to compensate for performance- deviations in the field. Passing a current of 6.5 Amps for 30 minutes will produce at least 1000 mg of free Chlorine in the water. Since our reactor volume is 1L, hence we get 1000ppm Chlorine in the water. Then increase the volume 4X (by adding 3 L drinking water) and you obtain a solution with at least 250 ppm free chlorine. The salt concentration also decreases proportionately, so 30,000 ppm salt in the initial 1L produces only 7,500 ppm salt in the diluted solution of 4 Liters. Then add ~5 mL of white vinegar (or equivalent dilute HCl) to each 1L, to make the pH value between 5.0 and 6.5. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright ©2020.
