Electrochemistry Electrolysis of Aqueous Salts • If the aqueous salt solution is dilute, hydroxide ions are oxidised at the anode and effervescence is observed as oxygen gas is produced: 4OH−(aq) → O2(g) + 2H2O(l) + 4e− (Hydroxide ions are oxidised to form molecular oxygen) • If the aqueous salt solution is concentrated, the anion of the salt is oxidised at the anode. • Note: Regardless of concentration, carbonate ions, nitrate ions and sulfate ions are not oxidised during the electrolysis of aqueous salt solutions.PDF Image | Electrolysis of Aqueous Salts
