Because the solution is dilute, hydroxide ions are preferentially oxidised to molecular oxygen and water at the anode: 4OH−(aq) → O2(g) + 2H2O(l) + 4e− b) At the cathode (–ve): Hydrogen ions are the only cations present in the solution.
