Negatively charged hydroxide ions are attracted towards the positively charged anode where they are oxidised to molecular oxygen and water: 4OH−(aq) → O2(g) + 2H2O(l) + 4e− electrodes? b) At the cathode (–ve): Positively charged sodium ions and hydrogen ions (cations) are both attracted to the negative cathode. Sodium is above hydrogen in the electrochemical series, therefore hydrogen ions are preferentially reduced to molecular hydrogen at the cathode: 2H+(aq) + 2e− → H2(g)
