Cells of the filter-press type have been developed during recent years. The Inter- 1 national Oxy-Hydric Company of Chicago makes a cell of this pattern in which the electrodes, corrugated to in- crease their surface, are constructed of special alloy heavily nickel-plated. The electrolyte employed is 20 per cent, caustic potash, and asbestos diaphragms are used. Oxygen is generated, of 99'5 per cent, purity, at the rate of 4 cubic feet per K.W.H. Other plant of this type is made by 2 L'Oxyhydrique Fran9aise and by Messrs. Eycken, Leroy 8 & Moritz. The following cells of various patterns for producing hy- drogen and oxygen have been patented during the last few years,but many of them still await industrial development:— Cell of Siemens Bros. & Obach, Eng. Pat. 11973 (1893). 4 A cell devised by K J.'Vareille in which the gases are effectively separated by a system of V-shaped troughs which completely divide cathodes from anodes. The cell of Fischer, Leuning & Collins described in U.S. Pat. 1004249 (1911). The Tommasini System, U.S. Pat. 1035060 (1912). The Burdett System, U.S. Pat. 1086804 (1914).
