(2) Technological Improvements to the Hall-Heroult Process Although significant optimization of process variables has taken place to cut production costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve working conditions, the basic features of the HH process have remained essentially unchanged since the process was discovered. In the past 50 years, developments have taken place mainly in the areas of improved insulation, pot linings, and cathode and anode materials [1, 12]. The advances in the areas have been described in several review articles [3, 18-22]. For example, a compressible insulation has been developed to minimise the potlining heaving caused by sodium co- depositing with the aluminium and intercalating into the carbon lining.
