A. Mars Design Reference Architecture 5.0 Baseline, 5x SLS Launches The crewed chemical propulsion architecture for the DRA-5 mission consists of a multiple-stage vehicle that is assembled in LEO over a period of 120 days.1 The individual modules are placed into orbit by five Ares V launches, with the crew delivered shortly before departure by an Ares I launch. The assembled crewed system architecture is shown in Figure 2. The MTV masses 486 tons when departing LEO. Because of the long assembly time, an additional module for reboosting during this process must be launched, bringing the total mass that must be placed into orbit to 534.5 tons. A summary of the vehicle is found in Table III-1, and a summary of the launch manifests in Table III-2.
