An outline of the screening test and the electrochemical test follows. Screening Tests The American Standard Testing Method D543, Test for Resistance of Plastics to Chemical Reagents, was used as a model in setting up a system to screen a large number of materials. A set of test parameters was selected and maintained through­ out this degradation testing in order to produce comparable data. were performed using the system shown in Figure 33-1. Standard testing parameters were selected with regard to the various conditions of batteryoperation. Allplasticswereviewedmicroscopicallyandphotographedprior to any degradation studies. Initially, all test specimens were exposed to chlori­ nated zinc chloride (30% solution, pH 1.0) for ^30 days at ambient temperature. Whenever the specimens and their test solutions appeared unaffected by this initial exposure, the temperature was increased to 50°C and the tests continued for an ex­ tended period of time. 33-3
