The stopcock a, shown in the diagram of a com- plete Schmidt apparatus (Fig. 3), is for emptying the ap- paratus. The electrolyte recommended is a 10 per cent, potassmm carbonate solution, and is probably preferred to the corresponding sodium salt on account of its freedom from chloride, which exerts a corrosive action upon the iron-work of the apparatus.
