CHAPTER VI. ELEOTEOLYTIO EEDUCTION OF OBGANIO COMPOUNDS. A LARGE number of patents published during the last thirty years indicate that considerable activity has been displayed in the application of electrolytic methods to the 1 production of organic substances. Most of the patents are of German origin, but during the past five years much attention has been devoted to this branch of chemistry in other countries. Most of the processes relate to the reduction of organic compounds, particularly the reduction of nitro-compounds, but oxidation methods have been utilised successfully, and in many cases substitution products and dye-stuffs have been prepared by electrolytic means. The literature of electro-chemistry-indicates that a large amount of research has been conducted in connection with the preparation of organic substances, and an excel- lent summary of this work will be found in the text-book 2 by Lob. Much of the work has been conducted with platinum electrodes and with relatively expensive organic solvents of high electrical 'resistance. These conditions militate 1 3 Met. and Chertu Eng.t 1915,13, 211. Electrochemistry of Organic Compounds, Walther Lob, 1903. (53)PDF Image | MANUFACTURE OF CHEMICALS BY ELECTROLYSIS
